Johnstown and Gloversville in Western Fulton County
Johnstown and Gloversville are the only two cities in Fulton County. They are both long and thin and border each other in their slim north south border, with Gloversville to the north. Both cities are surrounded by the Town of Johnstown. They were once the heart of the leather and glove-making industries in New York, hence the descriptive name Gloversville. Johnstown however was named after William Johnson, the loyalist leader of the area up to the American Revolution which included Fulton and Montgomery counties. He died just before the Revolution. After the Revolution, his family and other local loyalists fled to Canada.
